【创源大讲堂】    Buildings of the Future: A Glimpse of What Comes After Net Zero Energy and Carbon Neutrality

讲座时间:2018年3月20日上午10:00-11:30

讲座地点:西南交通大学镜湖宾馆院士厅

主讲人:Dr. Patrick Phelan

主讲人简介:Dr. Patrick Phelan is a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace

Engineering, and Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs at Arizona State

University’s Ira A. Fulton

Schools of Engineering. He received a B.S. from Tulane University (1985), M.S

from MIT (1987) and a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley (1990). He recently spent 4 years

in Washington DC as the Manager of the Emerging Technologies Program at the US

Department of Energy, Building Technologies Office. Previously, he served as

the Manager of the Thermal Transport Processes Program at the National Science

Foundation. He researches and teaches in the area of sustainable energy,

thermal transport, and energy policy.

讲座内容及其意义:

The

evolution of “green” buildings is generally towards net zero energy, and is

occurring very rapidly in some places. For example, the State of California has

mandated that all new residential buildings be net zero energy by 2020, which

of course is just around the corner. A more difficult challenge is

carbon-neutral buildings, but the 2030 Challenge from Architecture 2030

requires all new buildings to be carbon neutral by 2030. One can then ask what comes

after carbon neutrality? Are carbon-neutral buildings our ultimate goal for the

built environment, or should we keep on striving for an even more difficult

objective? The US Department of Energy Building Technologies Office, in

collaboration with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, organized a

year-long effort entitled “Buildings of the Future” with the goal to address

this question. This study involved an interdisciplinary panel of advisors and

numerous experts in various fields who participated in a series of webinars,

seminars, workshops, and conference presentations involving building

technologies, materials, architecture, construction practices, health, urban

planning, and environmental sciences to develop a coherent vision for buildings

roughly one hundred years from now. This presentation will discuss this vision

and the process that led to it, the set of quantitative metrics that were

developed to track progress towards the envisioned future buildings, and the

current state of development.
